Why We Should Do Things We Don’t Like

Bigger things make sense when we work through the small ones.

Life sure is fun doing things that we gravitate towards naturally, and it is necessary even, to engage in them.

But the world is made up of things we don’t like too, and they are meant to be experienced just as much.

Because even though something might not feel good to us, it can go a long way in shaping who we are trying to become.

The more we practice being okay with the discomfort of pushing through experiences we don’t like, no matter how big or small they are — the more we broaden our horizons, letting in not only what we want to, but also what we need to.

And when we train our mind to go through something not to its liking on a daily basis, we make it more resilient for the bigger moments;

Because it is our brain that tells us how to feel about different situations, and the more we make it grow used to some difficult feelings, the more it will learn to be okay with them — and tell us to be okay with them when the time comes.

We teach ourselves to be okay with any kind of surprises life throws at us, because we know if we can go through little acts of displeasure, nothing big can ever be so daunting that it throws us off track.

It’s like engaging in a mental workout;

Just the way our bodies stretch beyond our comfort levels to build up our muscles and physical strength, our mind does the same only to build up our mental strength;

Does it always feel ‘nice’ to wakeup early to workout, or come back from an exhausting day to hit the gym?

No, it doesn’t.

But is it still the right thing to do?

Yes.

The more frequently we do it, the more we feel okay with taking up different routines — it works the same way with our mind too.

So go for that cup of tea even if you consider yourself to be a coffee person;

Watch that movie till the end even if you think it’s the worst one ever made;

Attend that get-together even if you’d rather spend the evening home chilling by yourself.

Because the truth is, we’re not going to be able to have everything our way anyway, so might as well spend some time being okay with feelings that feel not-so-nice all the time.

The most routine acts of our lives can prepare us for the biggest moments.

We should learn to be okay doing things we don’t like, because we never know what we are prepping ourselves for in the process, and who knows — we might even have some fun along the way?
